Scottish Power a member of e7 requested ESD to carry out a study, looking specifically at the potential for developing a renewable electricity project at Mpeketoni through Mpeketoni Electricity Project a community based Electricity Company in Lamu District. The project is community based and was identified, as part of E7 commitment to provide affordable electricity to rural communities and as a key component of sustainable development and alleviation of poverty. E7 proposed to combine wind with diesel to improve the viability of the project using environmentally sustainable local resources and increase access to electricity in the area through installation of wind turbines and upgrading of generators.
Description of Actual Services:
Environmental Assessment for community based wind power project in Mpeketoni area comprising of the establishment of 2 wind turbines, relocating and upgrading the existing diesel generator, expanding the transmission lines, integrating wind and generator power and diesel storage facility. The project involved installation of the identified equipment’s and examining the resultant impacts. Components to be examined will entail the various activities, erection and operation of wind turbines, local connectivity, relocation of the diesel generator and supporting facilities, diesel storage, ambience, containment and storage as well as other utility structures.
